Infrared puzzler
Join Jay as he discusses how to inspect building envelopes with thermal imaging technology. He will cover validation of structural details, verification of energy performance (conduction and air leakage), location of moisture intrusion, and identification of structural and system degradation of roofs and facades. Jay will provide examples for each application and describe the necessary basic conditions. You will be challenged to solve puzzles based on IR image and case study details.

Addressing radon in the home
Exposure to radon gas is considered to be the second leading environmental cause of lung cancer, accounting for an estimated 20,000 deaths a year in the United States. In this session, we will discuss what radon gas is and how it is measured. You will learn the mechanism of radon entry into buildings and how building pressures affect it. You will leave with an understanding of the precautionary measures available to address radon gas in homes.

Tuck-under garage retrofits
Tuck-under garages present unique challenges and attention to detail when completing upgrades such as adding insulation or air sealing. Creating separation between the garage and the living space as well as effective insulation that won’t settle requires proper equipment, technique, and materials. Join this session to learn more about insulation machine setup, material options, and take a deep dive into a recent garage retrofit project.

Design features of energy efficient gas furnaces
Efficiency gains on both gas and electrical consumption can be achieved when installing multi-stage furnaces that meet new federal furnace-fan efficiency standards. A multi-stage furnace operates much the same way as a single stage furnace, except that the amount of heat it provides is not always at the higher design rate for the coldest day of the year. Fan efficiency is gained by replacing traditional PSC motors with one of two types of ECM motors: constant airflow or constant torque. Learn how these technologies are typically packaged together by manufacturers and how they can reduce energy costs and increase comfort for occupants.

Blower door testing in small multifamily buildings
Multifamily testing can be complicated but it all begins by making a plan. You don’t have to be worried if you’re new to testing small multifamily buildings for air leakage or anything else. With forethought and proper planning you and your team can leverage your current knowledge, skills and abilities. We’ll discuss multiple fan testing for single zones and strategies for approaching pressure neutralization testing, as well as how to handle logistics and scheduling testing in buildings with 4-8 units.
