Pre-conference session: Getting to zero with Passive House
Passive building highlights the efficiency-first path to a net-zero energy building. The PHIUS+ standard provides cost-optimized efficiency targets, guiding the designer to the sweet spot between energy conservation versus generation, on the path to zero. Attendees will learn the key performance criteria for PHIUS+ 2018 Certification, understand the development of these targets, and take away the design methodology to achieve this. The session will also cover the capabilities of WUFI Passive, the energy modeling tool used to guide the design and verify compliance with PHIUS+ performance targets.

Building products and systems: the good, the bad, the ugly
New building products and systems crop up like both sturdy trees and annoying weeds. Sometimes it is not so easy to tell the difference. Peter has been evaluating building products and systems for more than 30 years. He will lay out a "protocol" for evaluating building materials and then apply that lens to new products and even his Wingnut testing. You will be encouraged to offer insights on new products as well.

Residential mechanical ventilation systems 2.0
There are an increasing number of building codes, energy programs, and industry groups calling for whole-house mechanical ventilation systems, yet the subject is seldom given much attention even when required by building code! Do home builders and home owners really understand why systems are required? In many cases, some of the most practical systems can also be some of the most cost-effective, and contribute to better indoor air quality. In this session we will discuss best practices, system design requirements, and look at an updated group of mechanical system options and controls.

Getting it done: net zero homes to meet local climate goals (Extended session)
Cities and counties across Wisconsin are setting community-wide climate goals—goals to eliminate carbon emissions from all sources by 2050. The goals are relevant to builders because a home built today will still be part of the picture (good or bad) in 2050. This two-part session is an opportunity to learn about the goals and priorities local governments are setting and then, in the second part, to help co-create strategies that work for all stakeholders—builders and contractors as well as local governments and residents. If you’ve ever said “I wish someone had talked to us before they mandated X,” then you should be in this two-part session, helping to shape the future.

Healthy homes and home performance: making the homeowner connection
One of the greatest challenges the home performance industry faces is how to connect consumer demand for healthy homes with private market opportunities for home performance improvement. The demand for and awareness of healthy homes continues to grow, but few homeowners connect health issues with the systems that make up their home. Peter Troast will explain the trajectory of the healthy homes movement within home performance, and consumer trends supported by first-party statistics and market intelligence. He will unpack how contractors can bridge this communication gap with homeowners, and the foundations of a healthier home business and marketing strategy. This presentation will also offer contractors the opportunity to ask questions and receive industry- and situationally-specific perspective and feedback regarding their communications challenges.

Cathedral roof venting deep dive and demo
Last year, we demonstrated the Wingnut Roof Vent Testing on a small demonstration rig. Although the two-by-four easel rig revealed quite a bit about cathedral roof venting, it brought up the question of how it compares to real roofs. This session will show you how the demo rig has been improved. You will witness a theatrical fogger demo that will reveal what happens on real roofs for vented cathedral roof assemblies. You will understand how roof slope, depth of vent chute, orientation, and type of ridge vent all affect if and how much air is actually venting.

Design features of energy efficient gas furnaces
Efficiency gains on both gas and electrical consumption can be achieved when installing multi-stage furnaces that meet new federal furnace-fan efficiency standards. A multi-stage furnace operates much the same way as a single stage furnace, except that the amount of heat it provides is not always at the higher design rate for the coldest day of the year. Fan efficiency is gained by replacing traditional PSC motors with one of two types of ECM motors: constant airflow or constant torque. Learn how these technologies are typically packaged together by manufacturers and how they can reduce energy costs and increase comfort for occupants.

Your moisture problems solved: challenges and risks decoded
Tightly air-sealed, well-insulated buildings combined with increased ventilation rates have become mainstream and code required, and there is no going back. The era of actively controlling moisture has begun and realizing that the traditional methods will no longer effectively meet the new moisture demands is more important than ever. This session presents the building science perspective on the "new normal" and the challenges that builders and building performance contractors now must learn to deal with effectively. The time is now to learn why and how to address indoor moisture risks through dedicated moisture control systems in single–family homes and multifamily buildings. The new ACCA Manual LLH (low load homes) will be presented and discussed.

Bath fan installed performance: the pressure is on!
The subject of indoor air quality (IAQ) gets a lot of press these days and it's often assumed that just because a home is new that the installed mechanical ventilation systems can contribute to better IAQ. The most common types of ventilation systems include whole-house, bathroom spot, and kitchen spot. Of these three systems, it is Joe’s belief that the bathroom spot fans are probably used most frequently and are the most important, yet why do so many test poorly? This session will highlight several case studies clearly demonstrating the importance of good products combined with good installation practices.
