Building fortified homes to IBHS standards
Do you know the Institute of Business and Home Safety has a Fortified Build program to ensure a home or business is more disaster-safe? FORTIFIED Home™ is a set of engineering and building standards designed to help strengthen new and existing homes through system-specific building upgrades that will reduce damage from specific natural hazards. Lou will share how and why they did it at their Habitat for Humanity affiliate, what the costs were, and what strategies they carried forward after constructing the first Certified Fortified Gold home in Minnesota.

Design and performance of exterior walls using stone wool exterior insulation
To meet the increasing thermal requirements in energy codes, the use of continuous exterior insulation is often no longer an option but required. We will review options for continuous insulation in both residential and commercial applications and classify installation solutions based on advanced thermal modeling. We will discuss screw-through installation methods as indicated through validated industry research and analyze the durability performance of exterior insulation solutions by means of hygrothermal modeling. We will also cover case studies showing solutions using stone wool insulation.

Low-impact foundation systems
Join us to learn about low-impact foundations for residential projects. These foundation systems are a better, faster, environmentally friendly way to support decks, porches, pergolas, gazebos, and even entire housing developments. We will discuss the environmental impacts, spread-pile engineering, code compliance, installation, and what these foundations can be used for. You will have the opportunity to examine small spread-pile footing models with working pins.
