Existing buildings will have to be retrofitted to low/zero energy use on a large scale to mitigate climate change in the building sector. REALIZE is a research project created by the Rocky Mountain Institute, Passive House Institute U.S. (PHIUS), and the Net Zero Energy Coalition to evaluate the transfer-ability of the successful exterior retrofit Energiesprong model from the Netherlands. The goal is to evaluate the U.S. building stock and to identify exterior industrialized panel retrofit solutions that will make it more cost effective to upgrade existing multifamily buildings to low/zero energy. This presentation will report on solutions, optimization strategies, progress, and next steps on the first pilot project in Boston, Massachusetts.
